Lake Skadar

The lake is carpeted with white and yellow water lilies, reeds, willows, and edible water chestnuts. It is also home to over 280 bird species, including pygmy cormorants and the rare Dalmatian pelican, making it one of Europe's most important wetland bird habitats. You will occasionally spot tortoises, otters, foxes, weasels, moles and groundhogs

The best time to visit Lake Skadar National Park is from May to October when the lake’s flowers and plants transform the landscape into a lush and diverse ecosystem

The small fishing village of Virpazar is the main starting point for boat tours on the lake. Highlights of the tours include Fort Lesendro, Vranjina island, Kamenik island and the Kom monastery. Alternatively, you can rent kayaks from local shops that will give you recommendations and route suggestions

Entrance to the National Park is €5 per person, which you will have to pay if go on a boat tour on the lake. This fee is often not included in your boat tour price and you should buy the ticket separately at the visitor center in Virpazar, close to the main stone bridge

If you're into birdwatching, join a boat tour very early in the morning at sunrise. The lake is calm, there’s little to no boat traffic, and birds are actively feeding. This is your best chance to see pelicans up close!

As a prime wine-producing region, you will also find many family-owned, boutique wineries offering tastings paired with local food around the lake. It's the perfect way to wind down after a day on the lake
