Berat

The old part of town is made of two historic neighborhoods separated by the Osum River. Mangalem (traditionally Muslim) and Gorica (traditionally Christian) create the iconic "thousand windows" view

The castle is one of the highlights and provides amazing views over Gorica and the new part of town. The walk from the town center up to the castle is extremely steep (20–30min). If you have heavy luggage or poor mobility, pay for a taxi (~€5). Your knees will thank you!

The stones in the old quarters are worn smooth from centuries of use. They are as slippery as ice, even when dry. Do not wear heels or flip-flops, you will slip!

Cross the Gorica Bridge and hike up Gorica Hill for a bird's-eye view of the castle and Mangalem across the water. Another viewpoint is from the Holy Trinity Church, a red-brick Byzantine church perched on the edge of the castle hill. It is the best spot for photos during golden hour

Because the city is built into a limestone valley, Berat becomes a heat trap in July and August. Temperatures often exceed 40 degrees. Exploring the castle at noon during these months is borderline dangerous! If you find the city too hot, take a day trip to Osum Canyon and Bogovë Waterfall. It’s the best nature escape in central Albania and offers a total change of scenery
